Once upon a time, there were hundreds of distilleries in Ireland.
It was Irish whiskey that mattered and in the early 1900s Irish whiskey was the largest whiskey in the United States. But then they won the war for independence and were boycotted in the British Empire. Together with the prohibition era in the United States from 1922, it was the nail in the coffin for the Irish whiskey industry.
After a sharp decline, when only a handful of distilleries remained, there is now a recovery and since the 1980s Irish whiskey has been flowing again. New distilleries are springing up – Glendalough is no exception!
Glendalough Distillery was started by five friends from Wicklow and Dublin. All with a passion for the venerable craft of distilling. The idea behind the distillery is to unite tradition and heritage from previous generations with the innovation of today.
Glendalough (The Glen of two lakes) is a beautiful valley in the Wicklow Mountains just south of Dublin and has a fantastic story about the monk St Kevin, who is also depicted on
the labels.
