Chichibu Distillery opened in 2008, the first privately owned Japanese distillery to open in more than three decades. Success was immediate and they received enormous recognition. The founder of the distillery, Ichiro Akuto, is recognized both in Japan and internationally for producing some of the world's and Japan's finest whiskies available today.
Chichibu Distillery founder Ichiro Akuto comes from a family with a long history in the whisky and spirits industry and distilling with a history stretching back 21 generations. Akuto Shuzo started producing Sake as early as 1625 in Chichibu, Saitama.
Ichiro bought his father's old whisky from the Hanyu distillery after the financial crash of 1990, around the turn of the millennium Ichiro released "The Playing Card Series", with that success he built Chichibu where he distills whisky with love and respect for the Scottish Whiskey tradition with precision and balance from Japan and the shokunin philosophy.
